The exact beginning of the car was in
1885, when Gottlieb Daimler invented a motor cycle with a petrol
engine. But the first car was made in 1886. It was just an old
horse-carriage, there was rebuilt to the purpose. The car was
chased of a four-stroke engine, which was water cooled with a
disc-cooler. The engines ignition was with incandescent- pipe,
and the gas mixing came from an evaporation-carburettor. The
engines effect was very little, that is only 1,1 h.p at 650
revolutions per minute. And its weight was big-90 kilo.
Another person, who has had big influence for the cars development and its prevalence, was Carl Friedrich Benz. Even though he was a little behind compared to Gottlieb Daimler. He was convinced , that the engine and the vehicle should be build as a harmonious teamwork. Because he wasn´t contented with the steeringgear on a four wheeled wagon, instaed he manufacture a three wheeled with a single steered wheel. He stick to this principle in a number of years. His engine had horizontal lying flywheel, because Carl Friedrich Benz was afraid of that, the rotation power had influence on the driving in the curves. As the gas engine, his motor had open crank, but on the other hand, it had induction ignition. This car generate 0,8 h.p at only 250 revolutions per minute.
Carl Friedrich Benz devolved three type of these three wheelers, but the sale went badly, until Emile Roger in Paris became agent, and adopted the case with a lot of interest. He took care of, that Carl Friedrich Benzs three wheelers came on a world exhibition in Paris in 1889, and it was after this, there came progress in the car production.
In the meantime Gottlieb Daimler had been busy developing his engine. He wanted to prove, that it could everything, that he earlyere had promised. His original car engine had now become to: boat engines, enginespumps for fire engine and engines to airships. But it was still the car engine, who had his big attention.
GOTTLIEB DAIMLER
Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900) was a German engineer. He invented in 1883 sparking plug, in 1885 invented he a motor cycle with a petrol engine( same time as Carl Friedrich Benz), and in 1886 the automobile.
Gottlieb Daimler, who was qualified gunsmith, studied in 1857 to 1859 at the Technical College in Stuttgart, and he worked in 1861-1863 in England. 1872-1882 was he the technical leader of Ottos and Langens gas engine factory in Deutz. He started his own factory in 1882 (together with his friend Wilhelm Maybach) in Cannstatt, and under the name "Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft" and through the years it become one of the leading factory in the automobile world.
Carl Friedrich Benz, 1844-1929, was also a German engineer. He invented in 1885-contemporary with Daimler- an automobile. Twenty-one years old he became an engineer and he worked 2,5 year as a fitter to get to learn the practical side of the profession. In 1871 he opened his own workshop in Mannheim, where he preferably produced gas- and petrol engines. His biggest desire was to make a construction of a vehicle, which was driven by a petrol engine.
After many years of hard work could the first automobile in spring 1885 leave the factory in Mannheim. In the following years Benzs cars were sold in U.S.A, England and France.
C.F.Benz first car is seated up in "Deutsches Museum" in Munich.
THE UNION
In 1926 was Benz factory united with Daimlers factory, and it was called "Daimler-Benz A.G". It became one of Germanys biggest car factories. Later the factorys name was changed to "Mercedes-Benz".
Mercedes`s name has a history:
A man by name Emil Jellinek was consul general for the austria-hungarian empire in Nice, where he also appeared as the unofficial agent for Daimler by selling cars to his well-to-do friends. When he entered himself to the motor race in Nizza Ugen 1899, he wasnt pleased to perform under his own name, so he entered himself as "M.Mercedes".
The pseudonym was his, at that time, 11-years old daughters name , and it gave him luck because he won the race.
The first Daimler with the name Mercedes was made in 1901.
